I’m young and healthy: is that enough to donate my eggs?

If you’re thinking about donating your eggs, you might be asking yourself if you’re a good candidate. A lot of the qualifications for becoming an egg donor are related to your health, so if you’re healthy and take good care of yourself, that’s a great start. Age is also important, so don’t delay the decision if you are interested.

Women who make good egg donors:

  • Are between 21 and 31 years old
  • Have a healthy body mass index (BMI) between 19-25
  • Are non-smokers
  • Don’t have any significant medical conditions or a history of sexually transmitted diseases
  • Don’t have significant family history of cancer
  • Don’t have significant family history of mental health conditions such as depression, substance abuse or schizophrenia
  • Have not recently travelled to an area at risk for Zika virus
  • Have attained some form of higher education, such as college or university

If you meet all these criteria, you’re on your way to becoming an egg donor!

You will still need a few more tests to determine eligibility, the most important test being a blood test to check on the health of your egg reserve, which will dictate if you can donate eggs. Because women are born with all the eggs they’ll ever have, and lose eggs each time they ovulate, a woman’s egg reserve diminishes with time. After 35 years old, a woman’s reserve starts to significantly decline, so egg donors should be young women with good quality eggs.
